Dear CNI supporter:
The depth, breadth, and raw political power of the Christian Zionist movement in America is scary. To one degree or another, as many as 60 million Americans profess their political support for Israel-can-do-no-wrong policies on religious beliefs.
I just wrote an article detailing where the movement started from, what they believe, how those beliefs are a mainstay of the Israel lobby. In the piece, “Towards a Christian Zionist Foreign Policy,” I note that:
This powerful block of pro-Israel sentiment provides a free pass to the illegal Israeli settlements and also to Tel Aviv’s brutal foreign policy vis-à-vis its neighbors, which has damaged other American interests in the region. It also means that any consideration of Arabs as aggrieved parties in the Middle Eastern fandango is seldom expressed, even though many of the Arabs being victimized by the Israel-centric policies are in fact Christian.
Christian Zionists religious leaders are zealots of the worst kind. One minister, John Hagee, has asserted, “The United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West … a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ.”
Lest you think he’s just on the fringe with not much clout, think again. Hagee’s Texas-based church has 18,000 members, he hosts TV and radio shows seen and heard by millions, and his pro-Israel lobby, Christians United for Israel, has as many as two million members. Hagee’s friends in Tel Aviv are thankful for his loyalty: the government gave him a Lear executive jet, complete with crew, to make his evangelizing more comfortable.
Alison Weir pointed out in her message the other day that it’s time to renew your support for our work. Please do so with a generous tax-deductible gift of $35, $50 $100 or even $25. Yes, there are powerful special interests that dominate the media and Congress, but thanks to your help, we are reaching new constituencies, educating more people, and motivating many more to action.
I ask you to circulate this article on Christian Zionism to friends, allies, and the media. Fighting the Israel lobby on every front is what’s retired in this battle. I hope you will continue to stand with CNI.
