Subject: capitalism did not take a beating
Sir,
Matthew D’Ancona writes (ST July 28th) “free markets, entrepreneurship and the wealth creating powers of capitalism……took a beating in the Crash”
No they did not. The values that took a beating were those of corporatism and socialism and the interventionist State which have dominated our country since the 1960s. Personal ownership of shares has collapsed, collective control of capital has risen, the all taxing State has dominated the economy, individuals families and entrepreneurs have been decimated and personal property and capital are daily being destroyed by recession or taxed away by the State.
The Tory Party has lost 90% of its membership in recent decades precisely because it became a Statist and corporatist party run along Heseltine/Clarke/Major principles rather than free enterprise, democratic, capitalist principles – of the kind which delivered election success in the 1950s and 1980s.
Yours etc
