Significant increase in fatalities and injuries caused by Israeli security forces

Dear supporter,

UNRWA is extremely concerned about the sharp increase in the number of Palestine refugees killed and injured during law-enforcement operations carried out by Israeli security forces (ISF) in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Many of these incidents have taken place in and around densely populated refugee camps.

In 2013, 17 Palestine refugees were killed by the ISF in the West Bank. In 2012, there were no refugee fatalities. Furthermore, UNRWA recorded 486 refugees injured in camps in 2013, compared with 38 in 2012.

UNRWA has observed a continuation of these disturbing trends into 2014. Since January, there have been seven Palestine refugees killed by the ISF in the West Bank, two of whom were children, killed on May 15 (Nakba Day).

UNRWA Spokesperson, Chris Gunness, stated: “These figures speak for themselves and tell their own shocking story. Without comment they make the case for investigation and action for which the United Nations and other parties have called. Our hearts go out to families who have lost loved ones, particularly children. Grief is always poignant, but to grieve in these sorts of circumstances is particularly painful. Children and their right to life deserve particular protection as provided for under international law.”

Amidst these heartbreaking realities, UNRWA staff is there to provide protection, counseling, and legal support to refugee families affected by such cruel violence. We can’t do this alone.

Please support our efforts by making a tax-deductible contribution today.

In peace and gratitude,
