USAREUR, TSC commanders preside over international logistics exercise
By Sgt. 1st Class Alexander Burnett

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany: Key leaders and subject-matter experts from U.S. Army Europe, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and Allied nations across Europe converged on Rhine Ordnance Barracks May 27 for a “table-top” exercise designed to explore theater logistical support capabilities and contingencies.

Gen. Ben Hodges, the USAREUR commanding general, Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, the 21st TSC commanding general, their key staff officers, partners and allies from across the region participated in the daylong training event.

“The goal of the TTX is to explain current and future logistical capabilities and requirements to members of U.S. European Command, USAREUR and our NATO allied partners in order to prepare for future combined training exercises,” said Lt. Col. Michael Ricciardi, the 21st TSC support operations distribution management center deputy and a native of Orlando. “By looking forward and getting the inputs from our leadership and our partner nations, we can better support a strong Europe.”

During the exercise, 21st TSC subject matter experts outlined three hypothetical training scenarios and what would be required to support each exercise. After each scenario, the floor was opened to discussion from the audience, said Sgt. Gregory Tomusko, a 21st TSC intelligence noncommissioned officer and a native of Broadview Heights, Ohio.

“We have members of the U.S., German, Dutch, British, Latvian and Lithuanian militaries here,” Tomusko said. “It is important that we let everyone give their expertise here so we can figure out the best way ahead for future European training operations.”

The exercise took more than a month to prepare, using information gathered from previous training exercises, including Atlantic Resolve and Combined Resolve. Key leaders and event organizers said USAREUR, the 21st TSC and partner nations will collaborate in future planning and training events.

“You are the foundation of the future of Strong Europe,'” O’Connor told participants. “We are building the base with today’s ROC drill. Logisticians need to understand location, relationships and readiness of troops.”

Hodges described the event as an innovative training tool that will contribute to essential regional missions. USAREUR, he noted, operates from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and beyond, supporting EUCOM, U.S. Africa Command and other combatant commands. Troops in Europe must provide deterrence to enemies and assurance to allies.

“This has been a great exercise and I am very happy with what the 21st TSC has accomplished,” Hodges said. “We have some of the best and brightest members of our military and our partner militaries here; by working together we can find the best way forward for Europe.”

Hodges then outlined a vision for future exercises in Europe.

“American tanks crossing German bridges carried by British vehicles and being refueled by Polish logistical assets,” he said. “We have a lot of logistical work to do for the new security environment.”

Saakashvili Appointed as Governor of Ukraine’s Odessa Region

Tbilisi: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko appointed on May 30 Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili as head of Odessa region in southwestern Ukraine.

President Poroshenko granted Ukrainian citizenship to Saakashvili on May 29. It means that Georgia’s former president will lose his Georgian citizenship.

Saakashvili, who has served as a nonstaff adviser to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and chaired Ukraine’s International Advisory Council on Reforms since February, is wanted by Georgia on number of criminal charges, which he denies as politically motivated.

Saakashvili has said for number of times since November, 2014 that he had been offered the post of Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, but he had to decline it as he did not want to lose the Georgian citizenship.

While presenting new governor to the local authorities in Odessa, President Poroshenko said that Saakashvili is his “friend from student years” and is known for “making the impossible possible.”

Saakashvili said that Odessa is “is one of the most interesting cities I have ever seen”, which should be “the main city, the capital of the entire Black Sea.” He also said that it will be a “lengthy process” and “new rules are required for that to happen.”

“Multi-ethnic, diverse, multi-cultural society of Odessa is its major potential – it’s not a weakness, it’s a huge chance; I do not know any other city with such history, traditions,” Saakashvili said. “There is no other city on the Black Sea, which can compete with its potential with this wonderful city.”

After the reports first emerged on Friday about Saakashvili’s nomination as governor of Odessa, Georgia’s ex-president posted on his Facebook and Twitter:

4 Poland: French Tanks, Warplanes Readied For War With Russia

French tanks take part in Exercise PUMA 2015

DRAWSKO POMORSKIE, Poland: Exercise PUMA 2015 wrapped up in Western Poland on Friday, 29 May 2015. Exercise PUMA was a manoeuvre exercise involving Polish, US and French forces. It allowed the Allied nations to test responsiveness, interoperability enhancement, and provided them with demanding opportunities to conduct small to medium sized armour and mechanized infantry field training.

A French armoured battle group with Main Battle Tanks Leclerc was deployed to the Drawsko Pomorskie camp, in north-western Poland for seven weeks, where it carried out training and operational readiness activities with the Polish and the US army.

Exercise PUMA 2015 included advanced battle drills and live firing exercise scenarios. The involvement of the French Leclerc Main Battle Tanks illustrated the importance of the exercise. It is also evidence of France’s determination to stand alongside Poland and its NATO Allies.

Stressing the importance of showing interoperability within NATO, Lieutenant-Colonel Henri Le Losq, Commander of the French detachment, said “Exercise Puma 2015 was an excellent opportunity to conduct integrated and extensive field training against multi scenarios and capabilities”.

“With the Polish tanks units, we stand together and train together in order to strengthen our partnership. It is important that we show readiness, resolve and unity”, he added.

French and Polish military cooperation, founded on a long-standing friendship between the two countries, has been developed and enhanced regularly throughout the past decade. It is covered by an intergovernmental agreement on defence cooperation that was signed in April 2002, reinforced in 2008 by a joint declaration on the French and Polish strategic partnership. This cooperation has intensified in the context of the Ukrainian crisis.

Joint participation in air policing operations, which constituted a framework of regular engagement, has been reinforced with the NATO assurance measures. The hosting of the French fighter detachment at Poland’s Malbork Air Base in 2014 marked a new step in increasing our interoperability. In addition, since 1 April 2014, French AWACS-type radar aircraft have helped perform surveillance of Baltic and Polish airspace. These flights are still operated regularly from Avord Air Base in France.

The deployment of the French armoured unit to exercise PUMA 2015 is a continuation of the already significant effort France has made within the NATO assurance measures framework.

Ukraine spends on war up to seven million dollars a day – Yatsenyuk

KYIV: Ukraine spends on war from five to seven million dollars a day.

This was stated by Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk following the meeting with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

“Every day of war cost Ukraine 5 – 7 million U.S. dollars,” the Head of Government said.

Yatsenyuk stressed that Russia continued to ignore the Minsk agreements and continued to supply heavy weapons to militants in Donbas.

According to Prime Minister, “the Russian game, accusing Ukraine or the West of not obeying the Minsk agreements, is devoid of any factual material.”

“They just lie as always,” Yatsenyuk said.
